Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

2009 is the 500th anniversary of one of our most famous monarchs Henry VIII becoming King - in 1509 aged just 17 years old. To mark this momentous event a special Henry VIII tour with an elite Blue Badge tourist guide taking in town and castle will be available for groups. The tour will end at a special Henry VIII exhibition in the Drawings Gallery at Windsor Castle.

From heroic Prince Hal to heavy old Henry with his six wives; Windsor holds many stories about his life, loves and legendary court during his 37 year reign.

In the town, your group will hear about his hunting and hawking expeditions in Windsor Great Park, his banquets of up to 30 courses including 'flaming swans and porpoise in armour' and his grand processions through the town on Garter Day.

Windsor Castle was Henry's third favourite residence (you will hear what the first two were!). We will show you where Henry's royal tennis court was situated and into St George's Chapel, the spiritual home of the Order of The Garter. Henry is buried here with his third and favourite wife Jane Seymour. See where Henry sat as a Knight of The Garter aged just 4, the viewing gallery built for Catherine of Aragon and hear how Henry sent five Knights to their executions. Finally, the story of Henry's funeral and how his coffin was so heavy that it had to be lowered into the royal vault by 16 soldiers of 'exceptional height and strength'!

The Henry VIII tour is in association with Rendezvous and Spirit of England and is available from 8th April 2009 - 18th April 2010.
